SAP Center opened in 1993 as the San Jose Arena, was the Compaq Center and then HP Pavilion — “the Shark Tank” throughout, and still — and took its current name in 2013. It is a hockey-first building with a steep, tight bowl and a reputation for being loud out of proportion to its 17,400 capacity, helped by the shark head the team skates out through.
Compact and steeply raked, which is the combination hockey wants. The 100 level along the boards is close to the sheet and the 100 corners are the value pick, because they still see both goals. The club ring flattens the angle. The 200 upper level is steep but the building is small enough that centre ice up there is a complete, comfortable view of the whole rink rather than a distant one. The lower rows behind the goals are the loudest seats and the hardest place to follow a play at the far end — a real trade in a building where the crowd is half the reason to come.
