Capital One Arena opened in 1997 as the MCI Center and spent eleven years as the Verizon Center before taking its current name in 2017. Dropping an arena into Chinatown, on top of the Gallery Place Metro, is credited with pulling that part of downtown Washington back to life. The Capitals and the Wizards share it, and it has been through a major renovation programme in the 2020s.

A conventional bowl with a deep lower tier. The 100 level along the boards is the closest complete view of the sheet; the 100 corners see both goals for less. The club ring between the tiers is the flattest angle and the most comfortable. The 400 upper level is steep and high, and for hockey its centre-ice rows are the best cheap seat in the building — the sheet is long, and the height is what lets you see the whole of it. Because the arena hosts basketball too, a few sections sit further from the boards than a purpose-built hockey room would allow.
