The Garden — MSG, the fourth building to carry the name — opened in 1968 on top of Penn Station and has never moved, which in Manhattan is the whole story: no parking lots, no plaza, just a circular arena stacked over the busiest rail terminal in the country. A billion-dollar renovation finished in 2013 hung two suspended bridges above the ice, rebuilt every seat and replaced the ceiling. The Rangers have played here since the building opened.

MSG is a bowl of two halves and the split is sharper for hockey than for basketball. The 100 level is close and level with the ice; the 200s begin high and rise hard, which is what gives the building its vertical, walls-of-people feel — and what makes the front rows up there far better than their price suggests, because a 61-metre sheet needs height to read. The bridges are their own thing: a handful of seats suspended over the ice with a view nothing else in the league offers. Corners at any level are the value play, and the section-to-section differences here are bigger than the seating chart admits.
