Opened in 1924 as the Martin Beck, this is the only Broadway house built in Byzantine style, and the only one of the era put up by a producer who owned it outright rather than leasing from the Shuberts. It took the name of the caricaturist Al Hirschfeld in 2003, sixty years after his line drawings started appearing in the theatre pages, and it is now run by ATG Entertainment.
The Broadway League lists 1,404 seats and Playbill 1,302 — a hundred-seat gap. ATG Entertainment publishes no figure for the house, so the capacity here is shown as an approximation.
A wide, shallow orchestra under a deep two-part mezzanine, which is the shape that gives the Hirschfeld its reputation for feeling smaller than its seat count. The front mezzanine overhang cuts off the top of the proscenium from the rear orchestra, so the back of the stalls is the part of this house to check on the map rather than assume. High side seats look across the stage instead of into it.
