Opened in 1927 as the Royale, briefly renamed the John Golden in the 1930s, then the Royale again for seventy years, and finally the Bernard B. Jacobs in 2005 for the man who ran the Shubert Organization through its recovery. Herbert J. Krapp designed it in Spanish style as one of a matched pair with the theatre next door.

The orchestra is wide rather than deep, so side seats stay usable much further out than at a longer house.
