The Booth opened in 1913 as half of a double structure with the Shubert Theatre behind it, the two sharing a wall and a private alley — Shubert Alley — that is now the most walked pedestrian shortcut in the theatre district. At 800 it is one of the smallest houses on Broadway, and it was built deliberately small, for plays rather than musicals.
514 seats in the orchestra, 252 in the mezzanine, twelve boxes, and nothing above that. No balcony at all, which is the whole point of this room: there is no seat in the Booth from which an actor's face is hard to read. The mezzanine overhang is shallow and starts late, so the rear orchestra keeps the full proscenium.
