Irving Berlin built the Music Box in 1921 with the producer Sam H. Harris, specifically to house his own revues, and he owned half of it until his death — the Shubert Organization only became sole owner in 2007. It is a small, plain, colonial-style room among a street of ornate ones, and it is generally reckoned the best-proportioned house on Broadway.

538 seats in the orchestra, 455 in the mezzanine and sixteen boxes, in a room of 1,025 — a mezzanine almost as large as the orchestra, which is very unusual and is why the upper tier here is not treated as the cheap seats. The room is short, the overhang is shallow, and the proportions were drawn for a performer who intended to stand on the stage himself.
