The largest theatre on Broadway, and the newest of the big houses — it opened in 1972 as the Uris, on the second floor of an office tower rather than as a building of its own, and was renamed in 1983 for George and Ira Gershwin. Roughly 1,933 seats in an Art Nouveau room designed for spectacle, run by the Nederlander Organization. It has held the same tenant since 2003.
1,933 is The Broadway League's figure and the one everybody quotes, but Playbill says 1,926, the published section counts add up to 1,927, and the Nederlander Organization publishes nothing. Wikipedia itself writes “approximately”. On any of those numbers this is the largest theatre on Broadway.
Two vast tiers: an orchestra of about thirteen hundred and a mezzanine of about six hundred, with no balcony above. The scale is the thing to plan around — the rear orchestra at the Gershwin is further from the stage than the rear mezzanine at most Broadway houses, and the mezzanine front is a genuinely elevated view rather than a slight lift. Sightlines are consistent because the room was designed in one piece.
