One of only two active Broadway theatres physically on Broadway, and the only one that started life as a horse market — William K. Vanderbilt's American Horse Exchange stood here from 1896 and the Shuberts turned the show ring into an auditorium in 1911. Herbert J. Krapp rebuilt the interior in the early 1920s and it was restored again in 2001. The Shubert Organization has owned it longer than any of its other houses.
1,045 seats in the orchestra, 486 in the mezzanine and thirty-six boxes, in a room of 1,600 — an orchestra of over a thousand under a single tier, which is a proportion no other Broadway house has. The room is exceptionally wide because it was a show ring, the stage apron pushes further into the audience than usual, and the mezzanine is shallow and high.
