Built in 1925 as the Guild Theatre for the Theatre Guild, and designed to look like an Italian villa rather than a Broadway house. It spent the 1940s as a radio studio and the 1950s to 1980s as the ANTA, then the Virginia, and in 2005 became the first Broadway theatre named for a Black playwright. ATG Entertainment runs it now.

A single steep balcony over a broad orchestra, which is unusual for a house of this vintage and gives it better sightlines from the back than most of its neighbours. The Guild built it for a repertory company rather than for musicals, so the stage is wide and the room is short, and even the rear balcony is closer to the action than the seat count suggests.
