Prudential Center opened in 2007 in downtown Newark, four blocks from Newark Penn Station, and gave the Devils their first purpose-built home after three decades in the Meadowlands. It is the smallest of the three New York-area NHL rooms at about 16,500, and the shape of the bowl — steep, tight, no dead space — is what makes it sound bigger than it is.

Small building, so the bad seat is rarer here than almost anywhere in the league. The 100 level along the boards is close enough to hear the boards flex; the 100 corners see both goals and cost less. The club and suite rings are shallow. The upper level starts low by NHL standards and is steep, which is the ideal combination for hockey: the whole sheet fits in front of you without the climb of a 20,000-seat arena. Even the last rows read the game. Behind the goals the lower rows are the loudest seats and the hardest place to follow a breakout.
