Spartan Stadium from its opening on 7 October 1933 until the game of 10 September 2016, when a fifteen-year, eight-and-seven-tenths-million-dollar agreement made it CEFCU Stadium. Its history since the mid-eighties is one of subtraction: 31,218 seats in 1985, 30,456 after the pitch was widened to FIFA dimensions in 1998, and then about nine thousand seats on the east side demolished in 2019 to make room for the seventy-million-dollar Spartan Athletics Center, which opened in August 2023. That is the sharpest proportional shrinkage of any recent stadium in the division.
The student tradition is called The Charge, the Battle for the Valley against Fresno State is the game of the year, and since 2025 there has been a block party outside before every match. San Jose is mild: the heat can bite on a September afternoon in the Santa Clara Valley, but frost and wind are not part of the calculation, and rain is only likely at the very end of November. Seven home games in 2026, one more than usual.
A horseshoe rather than a bowl. The west is the main stand with the press box, painted blue in the 2012 refurbishment, and most of it is metal bench with padded seating in the foundation sections. The east side is now the Athletics Center itself, with club seating on its second floor and, at field level along the touchline, tables and chairs under parasols. Visiting supporters sit at midfield on that side. The south end holds the 2011 video board. The north end is being converted from upper bleachers into a social terrace with a bar under the scoreboard, high tables and outdoor sofas.
