The building you sit in is not the one from 1921: all that survived the rebuild is the eighteen-acre hole in the ground. The original was an earthen bank with wooden bench on a steel frame, thrown up in five months, later extended to about ninety thousand, and it staged Olympic football, a Super Bowl and World Cup matches. Demolition began the day after the last home game of the 2005 season — the diggers started lifting the pitch while people were still in the stands — and two full crews working almost round the clock had the replacement open in September 2006. The capacity was deliberately cut by more than half.
Stanford has no official mascot: the previous one was dropped in 1972 and in 1981 the university settled on the colour alone. What you will see instead is the Tree, a redwood costume that has been a member of the marching band since 1975 and marked fifty years at the 2025 Big Game. Fan Fest opens three hours before kick-off. Pacific-time kick-offs mean dry heat in September and cool evenings by November.
It is a two-tier rectangle rather than a bowl — forty-three rows on the sidelines, twenty-two on the ends — and the pitch is twenty-nine feet below ground level, so the building reads as low from outside and you walk down to your seat. The closest rows are forty-five feet from the touchline, and the seats are three inches wider with six inches more legroom than the ones they replaced. Since 2025 the student section has been on the east sideline, running into the south end, to put them nearer the visiting bench. The premium food and the reservable cabanas are in the Archway.
