Carter-Finley Stadium opened in October 1966 as Carter Stadium, for two brothers who were the largest donors, with the field house named for another. The two names were joined in 1979, after the university cleared the construction debt twenty-six years ahead of schedule and ceremonially burned the bonds. The south end was closed in 2001, the west tower finished in 2005 and the north end rebuilt in 2006.

The band plays its way through the car parks before kick-off, the Alpha Wolf leads the two-part call and response, and a flight team goes over the top before every game. The particular quirk here is that the stadium allows pass-outs, so a good part of the crowd goes back out to the tailgate at half time and comes in again. It sits west of the city beside the arena and the state fairgrounds, with parking to match and almost nothing to eat within walking distance — which is why the tailgate is the culture rather than an add-on.

The lower bowl is dug into the ground, so you come in at concourse level and walk down to your seat, and it runs right round the pitch, with twin upper decks on the east and west sidelines. Both ends are closed by buildings — the field house at the north with the giant screen above it, the football centre at the south. The west is the modern side, with the suite and press tower. It is mostly bench, with backed seats concentrated in the club areas and the ends, and rentable seat backs are a normal thing here. The west side is the shaded one in early-season afternoons; the east side takes direct sun through September and into October, upper and lower.
