California Memorial Stadium opened in November 1923 with a Big Game, paid for by public subscription as a memorial to Californians killed in the First World War and re-dedicated in 2012 to all of the state's war dead. It has been on the federal register of historic places since 2006, which is why the rebuild at the start of the 2010s had to keep the original footprint and the neoclassical west façade while replacing everything behind it.

Tightwad Hill is the bank of ground east of the stadium, made from the earth dug out of Strawberry Canyon in 1923, and people have watched from it for free since the first game in that first season — an arrangement the university formally agreed to preserve. The victory cannon is up there and fires after every Cal score. The band plays in Sproul Plaza before kick-off, and most games here are afternoon games.

The bowl holds 62,467, but the southern-most sections have been tarped since 2022, leaving about 52,400 on sale.

The bowl is cut into the hillside, and the Hayward fault runs directly underneath it, effectively goalpost to goalpost. The rebuild dealt with that by putting independent surface-rupture blocks under each end zone, resting on sand and plastic sheet, with new expansion joints between them and the rest of the structure that you can see if you look. The west is the rebuilt modern side, with club seating, the press box and a glass terrace at the top; the east is largely untouched 1923 concrete and holds most of the students. From high up you get San Francisco Bay; from the west, the Berkeley hills. The southern-most sections have been tarped over since 2022.
