This was Bulldog Stadium for forty-two years, from 1980 until Valley Children's Healthcare bought the name in July 2022; the pitch has been Jim Sweeney Field since 1997. What makes the building unusual is that it is sunk: the field sits thirty-seven feet below ground level, so you come in at the top and walk down towards it rather than up. The consequence is a steeper rake and closer seats than the capacity suggests, and a great deal more noise.
The support is called the Red Wave and the programme's old motto — anybody, anytime, anywhere — is still the thing Fresno State says about itself. The end zones are painted in red and white checkerboard. The real variable is heat: this is the Central Valley, and a September afternoon here can sit between thirty-five and forty degrees with no shade to be had. By late November the problem reverses and tule fog can settle over a night kick-off.
A closed bowl, steeper than most, with more than five thousand individual seats between the eighteen-yard lines on the west and four thousand two hundred and forty backed seats on the east alongside the twenty-two sky suites added in the 1991-92 expansion. Everything else is aluminium bench. The video board and ribbon board are at the north end. The floodlighting is cantilevered off the structure rather than carried on towers, with four LED towers added in the corners in 2019. Because the whole bowl is dug in, even the back rows are closer to the field than the equivalent seat in a stadium of this size built at grade.
