Merlin Olsen Field at Maverik Stadium, and the spelling is right: the fuel chain writes itself without the c. It was Romney Stadium from 1968 until 2015, for E. Lowell Romney, the winningest coach in Utah State's history, and it was formally dedicated on 27 September 1969, a year after it was first used. The silhouette you see comes from 1980, when a ten-thousand-seat bowl went up behind the south end in a single stroke. It is the smallest stadium in the rebuilt Pac-12.
Students touch the helmet on the Merlin Olsen statue on the way in. The crowd sings The Scotsman, which is the most distinctive and least explicable tradition in the conference, and there is a Harley-Davidson procession before kick-off with Big Blue and the spirit squad. Logan sits at four thousand seven hundred feet in Cache Valley, a closed mountain basin with a serious temperature inversion: September is lovely and a November night goes below freezing.
The bowl is closed at the south and open at the north, which is where the valley wind comes in. The west is the home and premium side: around four thousand backed seats, and since the 2015-16 renovation more than seven hundred COVERED club seats, twenty-four suites and twenty loge boxes. Those covered club seats are the only sheltered seating in the building and in late October they are worth the difference. The east is aluminium bench, wooden until the early 2000s, with the Bear River and Wellsville ranges filling the view behind it. New Daktronics boards went into both ends for 2025.
