LaVell Edwards Stadium opened in 1964 on what had been a fruit orchard, was Cougar Stadium for its first thirty-six years and took its present name when LaVell Edwards retired at the end of the 2000 season. The building you see is mostly the 1982 job: the running track came out, the pitch was dug eight feet lower and permanent stands went up behind both ends, which is what turned a modest college ground into one of the largest in the west. Structural connectors filled the four corners in 2019, so the ring is now continuous.
The Y on the mountain behind the stadium is lit before home games, the crowd says a prayer before kick-off and nothing alcoholic is sold anywhere in the building — this is a stadium that runs by its own rules and is unembarrassed about it. The Wasatch range fills the view over the east side. The weather swings hard across a season: an early September afternoon here can be close to thirty degrees and a late November night close to freezing, and it drops fast once the sun goes behind the mountains.
Capacity fell from 63,470 to 62,073 when the 2024 seating work added backed seats, drink rails and more accessible spaces; several university pages still publish the older figure.
Two tiers on both sidelines, single-level stands behind both ends, and a four-storey press and suite tower on the west side that is the only covered structure in the building. Because the corners were filled at mezzanine level rather than rebuilt, the seating steps down slightly as it turns — worth looking at in 3D if your seat is near one. From 2026 the student section sits entirely in the south end rather than being split with the east stands, which changes the character of the east side. The west side goes into shade first as the sun drops behind the tower; the east stands hold the sun and the mountain view.
