Lane Stadium opened in October 1965, named for Edward Hudson Lane, an alumnus who led the fundraising; the pitch has been Worsham Field since 1992. It grew end by end — the north in stages to 2001, the south in 2002 — and the whole west side was rebuilt in 2006. Hokie Stone has faced the end zones since 2005. At just over two thousand feet it was for decades the highest stadium in top-division football east of the Mississippi.
Enter Sandman has brought the team out since 2000 and the entire building jumps in time with it; when Metallica themselves played here in 2025, the university's own seismological observatory recorded the crowd as a small earthquake. The players touch a slab of Hokie Stone coming out of the tunnel between two lines of cadets. The Marching Virginians and the Highty-Tighties both play, the Skipper cannon — built by cadets in 1963 — fires after every score, and keys come out on third down. Colour-coordinated effect games are announced in advance, so check which one you are walking into.
The west is the modern side: the press, suite and club tower from 2006, with backed seats added to the outdoor club a few years later. The east is the old side and is still essentially metal bench, patched rather than replaced. The south end is double-decked and the north end holds the student section. Nothing is covered, and at this altitude a November evening is cold and windy in a way the temperature alone does not convey.
