Bridgeforth Stadium opened in 1975 as Madison Stadium with about five thousand two hundred seats, was renamed in 1990 for William E. Bridgeforth, and its pitch has been Zane Showker Field since 2003. The sixty-two-million-dollar project of 2009 to 2011 is what defines it now: the old west stand was demolished, the running track came out, and a two-tier west side went up with a thousand-seat club level and sixteen suites, taking the ground from under sixteen thousand to 24,877 in one go.
Streamers in the university's colours go up after every touchdown. Duke Dog works the crowd and the Marching Royal Dukes, one of the largest bands in the country, play before the game and at the interval. The Shenandoah Valley gives cool autumns rather than hot ones, so the seating decision here is about sun rather than heat.
This is the most lopsided bowl in the conference and the asymmetry is the whole decision. The WEST is tall and modern — two tiers, club level, suites, press and operations. The EAST is a single tier of backless bench with nothing above it at all, which makes it both the cheapest side and the most exposed: no shade, no shelter, nothing overhead. The lower bowl runs as an L along the north and west. The SOUTH END HAS NO SEATING — it is the Plecker performance centre with the Daktronics board on top. The north end got permanent stands in 2011 and is where the students and the band sit.
