Opened in 1950 as Byrd Stadium, this is still the same horseshoe, open at the west end, with four eras of additions around it. The name has changed more than the building: Chevy Chase Bank Field, then Capital One Field, then Maryland Stadium in 2015 when the Byrd name was withdrawn, and SECU Stadium since 2022. The lower-level seats were widened by about a fifth in 2025, with handrails and accessibility work added, which is why the capacity is now the lowest it has been since the north deck went up in 1995.

The band is the Mighty Sound of Maryland and the players come out from under a giant turtle shell. Permanent lights have been in since 1985, so afternoon and evening games both happen. The ground sits high enough that from the upper deck you can pick out the Capitol, the Washington Monument and the National Cathedral, which is not something you can say about many stadiums in this sport.

Capacity fell from 51,802 to 46,185 in 2025, when the lower-level seats were widened.

The 1950 lower horseshoe is the core. Tyser Tower on the south side is the press, suite and mezzanine structure, rebuilt at the end of the 2000s; the north side carries the only upper deck in the building. The band and the students are in the closed end. Because the pieces come from 1950, 1991, 1995 and 2009, two seats at the same nominal level can sit at noticeably different heights and angles, which is the thing worth checking in 3D here. The synthetic surface was chosen to run cooler, because September games in Maryland are hot.
