Spartan Stadium started life as College Field and grew in the classic Big Ten way — a bowl that was deepened, then double-decked, then given a tower of club and press space on the west side in 2005. The result is a tight, vertical building for its capacity: the seats are stacked rather than spread, so it feels smaller and sounds bigger than the numbers suggest.

Kick-offs here are often late-afternoon or night in a part of Michigan where autumn arrives early, and the closed bowl holds the noise in rather than letting it out over the rim. The walk in from the campus side crosses the Red Cedar river, which is where most of the tailgating ends up.

The lower bowl runs all the way round and its sideline rows are close and low. The upper deck sits above the west side and part of the east and is steep — the front rows there are the best seats in the stadium for reading a game, and the back rows are a long way up. End zone seats are cheap and the view straight down the field is better than people expect, though you lose the near sideline. Corner sections are the quiet bargain here.
