The Rose Bowl opened in 1922, is a National Historic Landmark and is the only stadium on this list that is more famous for a single January game than for the team that plays there every autumn. It is a true bowl — one continuous ring of seating with no upper deck at all — sunk into the Arroyo Seco with the San Gabriel mountains behind the north end. UCLA plays here rather than on campus, about ten miles away.

Golf-course tailgating in the Arroyo, mountains behind the far end and southern Californian afternoon light are the whole experience; this is the most scenic stadium in the sport and it is not close. The bowl is wide and open, so it never sounds as loud as its capacity suggests. Sunset during a late-afternoon kick-off puts the mountains in colour behind the north stands.

Because it is a single continuous slope with no separate decks, the only variables are how high and how central you sit. The lower rows are close but very flat — the bowl was built for a wide field and the first rows read the far side poorly. The middle third of the slope on the sidelines is the reference view and the best seat in the stadium. The upper rows are high but never overhung, so the field stays whole. The north end rows are where you get the mountains in frame.
