Camp Randall is built on the site of a Civil War training camp and is one of the oldest stadiums still in use in college football. It has grown by addition rather than by rebuild: a low horseshoe of old concrete on three sides, a tall modern upper deck on the west, and a student section that occupies the whole south end and behaves like a separate venue.

Between the third and fourth quarter the entire stadium jumps, in time, to a song played over the tannoy, and the structure moves enough that it has been engineered for it. It is the single best-known thing about the building and it is worth being inside for. Madison is a lake city and October afternoons here are bright and cold in the same hour.

Wisconsin publishes 76,057; other sources round the figure differently.

The lower bowl on the sidelines is old, close and steep in short bursts; rows there run long, so the seat number matters as much as the section. The west upper deck is the tall modern structure and its front rows are the best-balanced view in the stadium. The south end is students and standing; the north end sits behind the goalposts with a full view down the field. What varies most is how much the old roof overhangs cut into the sky from the back rows of the lower sides.
