SHI Stadium opened in 1994 on the site of the Rutgers Stadium of 1938, which was demolished to build it; Rutgers spent the 1993 season at Giants Stadium in the meantime. It was Rutgers Stadium until 2011, then High Point Solutions Stadium and briefly HighPoint.com Stadium, and has been SHI Stadium since 2019. The 2009 rebuild closed the open south end and took it from forty-one thousand to its present size.

A Revolutionary War cannon, worked by a crew of re-enactors in the north-west corner, fires after every Rutgers score, at the interval and at the end of a home win. The Riot Squad students are in the south end, and that is where the Scarlet Knight and Excalibur the horse celebrate a touchdown. The stadium is deliberate about the fact that Rutgers played the first game of this sport in 1869: there is a monument to it, and one wall behind a goalpost is dedicated to that match.

Rutgers publishes 52,454 since the south end was closed in 2009; temporary seating has pushed attendance higher.

It is a concrete bowl sunk into the Busch campus, with a continuous lower level and small upper decks of about five thousand seats on both sidelines. The east mezzanine is loge and club seating; the west mezzanine is the press box. The south end is the 2009 work and holds the main screen, the recruiting pavilion and the student section; the north end is the low, open end left over from the original horseshoe, with the Raritan beyond it. Nothing is covered.
