Kinnick Stadium opened in 1929 as Iowa Stadium and was renamed for Nile Kinnick, whose Heisman season is still the reference point for the programme. A 2006 renovation rebuilt the press side and the concourses and a 2019 project replaced the north end zone, but the bowl itself is the original: low, symmetrical and close to the field.

At the end of the first quarter the entire stadium turns to the east and waves at the children's hospital that overlooks it. It started in 2017 and it is now the thing visiting fans remember. The rest of the day is straightforward midwestern football in a compact bowl where the crowd sits on top of the touchline.

This is one of the tighter big bowls in the sport, so almost every seat is closer to the field than the equivalent seat elsewhere. The lower sidelines are the reference view; the upper deck on the west side is steep and its front rows read the game best. The north end is the newest structure and its seats are modern and higher than the old south end, which is low, open and cheap. The corners give you the whole field and cost less than the middle.
