This was Cyclone Stadium when it opened in 1975; the pitch was dedicated to Jack Trice in 1984 and the whole ground took his name in 1997, making it the only stadium in top-division football named for a Black athlete. Trice was Iowa State's first, and he died in 1923 of injuries taken in a game at Minnesota. The bowl grew end by end and reached its present size in 2015, when the south end was closed with an upper deck and a club.

Somewhere in the middle of the game the whole ground does the Juicy Wiggle with the marching band, which is exactly as ridiculous and as committed as it sounds. People stop at the Trice statue on the way in. The ground had no permanent floodlights until 2002, so night football here is newer than the building; the wind picks up from the start of October and the open north end is where you feel it. Through 2026 the CyTown development is under construction on the approach, so the car parks and the walk in are not what they were.

Two decks on both sidelines, a closed south end with an upper deck and an indoor club behind it, and a north end that is not seating at all but the athletics building — which is why the bowl reads as three-sided. The corners are grass berms and are the cheapest way in. The press box and the suites are on the west; there is a club on the east with heated seats for the late-season games. The east lower bowl is the one to want for an afternoon kick-off, because the sun ends up behind you; the west side takes the sun full on and only its upper rows get shade from the press structure.
