Opened in 1921 as a memorial to the Kansas students killed in the First World War, this is the seventh-oldest ground in the sport and the oldest west of the Mississippi. It was simply Memorial Stadium until David Booth's gift renamed it in 2017. It is now most of the way through a rebuild: the first phase replaced the west side and the north end, and Kansas played the whole of the 2024 season away from home while it happened, returning in 2025.
2026 is a building-site season and it is worth knowing that before you buy. The east side came down in December 2025 for the second phase, so only its lower bowl is open, with temporary concessions and toilets on that side, and a new low stand behind the south end holds the students and the marching band. The full bowl returns for 2027. What is already finished is genuinely different from the old ground — much steeper, much closer, and much louder for it.
That was the published figure for 2025. The east side came down in December 2025 for the second phase of the rebuild, so capacity is lower through the 2026 season and the full bowl returns in 2027.
The rebuilt west side is far steeper than the stand it replaced and its front row sits seven or eight feet above the pitch rather than at ground level. There are around three thousand club seats spread across four separate club spaces, with the suites brought some eighty feet closer to the pitch than they used to be. The north stand is tight to the goal line where the old horseshoe curved away, its seats laid out to spell a red letter, with the conference centre underneath. The video board behind the south end is two and a half times the size of the old one and much closer in. For 2026, remember that the east side is lower bowl only.
