It opened in 1980 as Mountaineer Field — a name the pitch still carries — and took Milan Puskar's name in 2004 after his gift to the university. It was modelled on Iowa State's ground and sits in a fold of the hills, which is why it feels steeper and tighter than its capacity suggests. Both ends were enclosed in 2007, and the pitch itself was rebuilt in the middle of the 2010s to strip out the heavy crown it had been built with for drainage.
The team walks to the ground from the football building before kick-off — the Mountaineer Mantrip, named for the wagon that carries miners underground — and touches a coal pedestal that stands as a memorial at the north-east gate. The Mountaineer fires a musket after scores. After a win the whole ground sings Country Roads, which John Denver himself sang at the opening in 1980, having arrived and left by helicopter. The children's hospital next door is part of the day here. Note that this is the last season for the current press side: demolition of the west tower starts as soon as the 2026 season ends.
A continuous lower bowl with an upper deck over both sidelines that runs on into the corners. Suites sit under the west press box, there is a two-storey suite structure behind the north end from 2004 and more suites at the south end from 2008, plus a club section on one sideline. Because the ground is cut into a slope the concourses arrive at different heights on different sides, so check which gate your ticket wants. The west side goes into shade as the afternoon runs on; the east side is the sunny one.
