Scott Stadium opened in October 1931, given by Frederic William Scott in memory of his parents. Its full name is a stack of them — the Carl Smith Center, home of David A. Harrison III Field at Scott Stadium — with Smith for the gifts at the turn of the century and Harrison for paying to put natural grass back in 1995. The upper decks opened in 1980 and the project finished in 2000 closed it into the horseshoe it is now.
The Cavalier rides out on horseback with a drawn sabre ahead of the team, which only became possible again when the artificial surface came out. After every touchdown the crowd links arms and sings The Good Old Song. Beyond the open end you are looking at Monticello Mountain and the Blue Ridge, which is the argument for sitting where you can see out.
A double ring on the sidelines with the suites and club seating between the two levels, and metal bench almost everywhere outside the premium areas. The south end is closed. The north end is open and is a large grass bank — the Hill — which is where the students go, with the video board raised above it; in the 2000 rebuild that bank was moved thirty feet closer to the pitch. Nothing is covered.
