Kenan Stadium was built in seven months and first played on in November 1927, paid for by a gift from William R. Kenan Jr. It was Kenan Memorial Stadium until 2018, when the university withdrew the original dedication and shortened the name. The west end was built out in the 1990s to make the horseshoe, and the east end was closed by the Blue Zone in 2011, which is when the ground reached its modern shape.
The Victory Walk leaves the Bell Tower two and a half hours before kick-off with the band and the cheerleaders, and the Bell Tower is lit Carolina blue after a win. Rameses, the live ram, is on the sideline, and there is a block party by the tower beforehand. This is the hundredth season of football here, marked with two new end-zone screens, nine ribbon boards, new sound and a rebuilt press box.
North Carolina publishes 50,500 since individual seats replaced the metal benches in 2018.
The pitch runs east-west, which means the sidelines are the north and south stands — both with a lower bowl and a second tier. The west end is the student section and the only part of the ground that still has metal benches. The east end is the Blue Zone, the modern premium block, with club and loge seating a few metres from the pitch and suites above. The upper tier is reached by narrow stairs and its concourse does not run all the way round, so pick your side before you go up. Longleaf pines and oaks stand right against the stands, which was in the original design brief.
