Gerald J. Ford Stadium opened in September 2000, bringing football back onto campus from the Cotton Bowl and replacing Ownby Stadium, and it is named for the banker who paid for most of it. It is Collegiate Georgian brick to match the rest of the campus, and the pitch sits twenty-five feet below ground level with half the seating below grade, which is why it barely reads as a stadium from the street. The horseshoe's open south end was closed by a three-level complex in 2024, the same year SMU joined this conference.
Peruna, a black Shetland pony and the mascot since 1932, waits behind an end zone and gallops the length of the pitch; since 1996 conference rules have limited that to the end of each quarter. Nobody here says tailgate — it is Boulevarding, on Bishop Boulevard under the live oaks, from four hours before kick-off, led by the band and by Peruna. There is a white-out for the season opener.
SMU publishes 33,200 since the south end complex opened in 2024; older sources carry about 32,000.
The 2000 bowl plus the three-level south complex, with a couple of thousand club seats and about as many suite seats spread across loge boxes, a three-level tower, the press box and the new end. There is no roof, canopy or overhang anywhere in the building. At midday the sun is high over the south-east corner and then swings round to set behind the west side, so the west sideline — shielded by the press and suite tower — goes into shade first, and the east sideline is the sunny one for most of the day. The only other shade comes off the new south complex.
