Opened in 1987 as Joe Robbie Stadium, this building has carried more names than any other in the sport — Pro Player, Dolphins, Land Shark, Sun Life — before becoming Hard Rock Stadium in 2016, and it was rebranded again, temporarily, as a neutral name for the 2026 World Cup. Miami moved here from the Orange Bowl in 2008 and shares it with the Dolphins. The 2016 rebuild put an open canopy over the whole seating ring, pulled the seats in closer to the touchline and ended the building's convertibility for baseball.
The Tunnel of Smoke, made with fire extinguishers, is a tradition carried over from the Orange Bowl in the 1950s. Sebastian the Ibis spells out the programme's name after every touchdown, The U sign goes up, and four fingers go up at the start of the fourth quarter. The student section is called The Eye, and the group that runs it sets off extinguishers over its own stand between the first and second quarters. This is a night stadium, and a fair part of the crowd is still tailgating when the first quarter starts.
Three levels — lower bowl, club and upper deck — and the canopy covers more than nine seats in ten, although the pitch itself is left open to the sky. The building lies north-west to south-east, and that geometry decides everything in September: the south sideline is reliably in shade, the lower bowl on the north side is the most exposed seat in the ground, and the upper deck is out of the sun at any hour. The end zones swap over as the afternoon turns.
