The original Alumni Field opened in 1915 beside the Gasson quadrangle, but the stadium in use now is a different building on a different site — the lower campus — put up in a hundred and fifty-six days and opened in September 1957 against Navy, with the young senator John F. Kennedy helping to make it happen. The upper decks arrived in 1988 and the rebuild in the middle of the 1990s took it to its present size. It has never carried a corporate name.
There is the Eagle Walk, the Flutie statue and the football museum by the gates. The one to know about is the Red Bandanna Game, which honours Welles Crowther, the Boston College player who died saving people in the World Trade Center; this season it falls on the eleventh of September, the twenty-fifth anniversary, and it is a Friday night. November in Chestnut Hill is cold and the wind comes across the open corners.
A flattened, almost octagonal lower bowl runs right round the pitch, and above it sit four separate free-standing upper decks, one per side, each with its own limited concourse — so if you are up there, you stay up there for the whole half. The suites sit between the decks. The lower bowl is metal bench apart from the middle of the sidelines. The press box is at the top of the west stand, which also looks out on the spires of Gasson Hall, and the corners are open brick. The upper decks rake steeply and the sightlines are good; the lower bowl is where you get heads in the way. A premium rebuild of the west side, adding more than seventeen hundred backed and premium seats and two club rooms, is due this season.
