Michie Stadium was cut into the hillside above Lusk Reservoir in 1924 and named for Dennis Michie, who organised Army's first football team and was killed in Cuba in 1898. It became Michie Stadium Preserved by USAA in June 2026 under a preservation partnership with the academy, and the playing surface has been Blaik Field since 1999. Its capacity chart runs backwards: sixteen thousand at the start, a peak of 41,684 from 1969, a record crowd of 42,765 in October 1971, and rather less than that today.
The Corps parades in full dress on The Plain three hours before kick-off, then more than a thousand cadets march into the stadium in formation behind the band; the mules have been the mascot since 1899; the parachute team delivers the match ball; cannons fire; and the players touch a bronze plaque in the south-east corner carrying General Marshall's demand for a West Point football player before they go out. More than four thousand cadets stand for the entire game on the east side and function as a twelfth man. At the end both teams face their own supporters and sing.
The Michie Stadium Preservation Project rebuilt the east side for 2026: West Point lists 38,000, while the project itself puts the new East Stands at about 36,000.
Read the 2026 map rather than an old one. The Michie Stadium Preservation Project demolished the 1962 east stands and replaced them with a hundred-and-sixty-thousand-square-foot structure holding suites, loge and ledge seating, a plaza, concessions and part of the hall of fame, with the cadet seating below it running goal line to goal line — and every section, row and seat number in the whole building was reissued for 2026, so any seating plan from before this season is worthless. The press box is on the west. The rest of the bowl is bench seating accumulated over a century of additions, so levels do not line up between sections, and the front rows on the main walkway lose sight lines to people walking past.
