Protective Stadium opened in 2021 in downtown Birmingham next to the convention centre, part of a regeneration scheme, and it arrived at a strange moment for the programme: UAB had had its football shut down entirely in 2015 and 2016 before being brought back. For thirty years before this the Blazers played at Legion Field, a much older and much larger building a few miles away, and the two get confused constantly. This one is a Populous design that cost a hundred and seventy-five million dollars.
Birmingham in September is hot and humid enough that kick-offs tend to be after dark. Blazer Village runs before the game with live music and the shop, and the concourses are wide enough that moving around at half-time is easy — a small thing that a lot of older grounds get wrong. The building is busy the rest of the year too, with the Birmingham Bowl, a professional football team, a soccer club and the state high-school finals all using it.
Asymmetric, and the asymmetry is the whole seating decision. The east side, the visiting side, is stacked in two levels; the west side, the home side, is a single lower bowl with the premium club building above and behind it — and that building throws shade across the lower west seats, which in Alabama is a feature rather than a detail. The ends carry the smallest blocks, there are cabana suites as well as indoor ones, and most of the bowl is bench seating with padded backed seats in the middle of each sideline. The bowl is open rather than closed.
