Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium opened on 21 September 1963 as Ficklen Memorial Stadium with ten thousand seats, took the Dowdy half of its name in 1994, and has grown roughly fivefold since. The playing surface is Bagwell Field, natural grass, and the whole thing now sits inside what East Carolina calls the Grady-White Boats Athletic Campus. The five-storey TowneBank Tower on the press side, finished in 2019, is the newest and tallest part of it.
Purple Haze drifts across the field, a costumed pirate works a cannon behind one end, and at the start of the fourth quarter the pirate flag comes down and a red No Quarter flag goes up with the lights and the sound system behind it — since 2017 the students in the Boneyard have raised a nylon version ninety feet across as well. The Pirate Walk starts two and a half hours before kick-off between the Minges Coliseum and the Murphy Center. It is the loudest ground in the conference and it does not pretend otherwise.
Stands on both sidelines with an upper deck on one of them from 1998 and a club level from 1999, a horseshoe of seven thousand seats added at one end in 2010, and the other end left open. Ten thousand two hundred purple backed seats run between the thirty-five-yard lines on both sidelines and are the comfortable buy. One thing to check before booking: the section numbers do not run in a simple circle round the bowl, so two numbers that sound adjacent can be on opposite sides — the interactive map settles it in a second. The upper deck and the tower side give the widest read of the field.
