This is a working war memorial that happens to stage football. It opened on 26 September 1959 and carries no person's name and no sponsor's: the names of major Navy and Marine Corps engagements since the beginning of the twentieth century are set around the rim of the bowl, the flags of all fifty states and the territories fly above it, and thousands of commemorative plaques are fixed to seatbacks and walls. Seen from above, the gold seatbacks in the upper ring spell GO NAVY.

The Brigade of Midshipmen marches on in formation before kick-off, comes down to the end zone to do press-ups after every score, and waves its caps on every first down; at the end both teams line up in front of their own supporters and sing their alma maters, winners and losers alike. There is a new hospitality development in the south end for 2026 — a seven-and-a-half-million-dollar project paid for by alumni, adding two pavilions and three clubs.

Two tall white towers on the east and west hold most of the seating, and the sideline stands run out to the goal lines before turning into end seating. The north end is Memorial Plaza, a grass slope with bleacher pods behind it and by far the most informal place to watch. The south end is compact, steeply raked and topped by suites. Press facilities sit high on both sidelines with club seating alongside. The practical advice here is specific and worth following: sit on the WEST side to keep the afternoon sun off you. Nothing is covered, and the wind off the Chesapeake in November is a real consideration.
