The Alamodome opened on 15 May 1993, built by the City of San Antonio for an NFL franchise that never came, and it is still owned and run by the city rather than by a team. The roof is fixed and the building is closed and air-conditioned; what moves here is the seating, not the roof, and reconfiguring the bowl takes the best part of a day. UTSA has played in it since the programme's first season in 2011.

It is the only ground in the conference where the weather is irrelevant, and in San Antonio in September that is worth a great deal: the heat is a problem in the car park and nowhere else. UTSA's first-ever game here drew 56,743, a record for a new FBS programme, and the building has staged five men's Final Fours. The Spirit Walk brings the team down Roadrunner Alley between the car parks about an hour and a quarter before kick-off, with the band and Rowdy the Roadrunner.

That is UTSA's configuration: the upper level is curtained off for Roadrunner games, while the dome's full football capacity is 64,000.

Five levels, of which UTSA uses the lower ring and part of the one above it; the upper level is curtained off for Roadrunner games, which is why the number on the ticket page is around thirty-five thousand rather than the sixty-five the building holds. That curtain is the thing to understand before you buy: a seat in the lower bowl here is closer to a full house than the same seat would be in an equivalent open stadium, because everything above it is closed. The students take a long run of the lower bowl with the Spirit of San Antonio band inside their block, so that side is the loud one. Everything is indoors, so shade, sun and wind simply do not enter into it.
