Raymond James Stadium opened on 20 September 1998 and has carried the same name ever since, which makes it unusual among NFL buildings. Its signature is Buccaneer Cove beyond the north end: a two-storey fishing-village facade of concessions and a hundred-and-three-foot pirate ship in steel and concrete whose cannons fire seven times after a touchdown and three after a field goal. South Florida has played here since its third-ever home game, in October 1998.
This is the last season of that arrangement. South Florida's own stadium on campus opens in September 2027, so 2026 is the end of nearly thirty years of a college programme playing eight miles from its lecture halls. Kick-offs are usually in the evening, because a Tampa afternoon in September is unbearable in an uncovered bowl, and the tailgating happens in the surrounding car parks rather than on campus.
That is the stadium's full football configuration; South Florida sells only part of the bowl, so a Bulls crowd sits well below it.
A two-ring NFL bowl with a suite level between and a hundred and thirty-four suites with retractable windows, plus two enormous clubs behind the sidelines. The upper ring is a long way up and a long way back for a college crowd, and South Florida does not sell all of it: the working configuration is the lower bowl and the club level, which is why a Bulls crowd sits well below the building's nominal capacity. Lower sideline seats are close and the rows are long, so the seat number matters as much as the section. The end zones put the video boards straight in front of you.
