This was L. T. Smith Stadium from its opening on 21 September 1968 until July 2007, when a five-million-dollar gift from a Bowling Green grocery company added the first half of the name; the pitch has been Jimmy Feix Field since 1991. L. T. Smith both coached the team and ran engineering at Western Kentucky, which is a combination you do not often see on a stadium. What you sit in today is the fifty-million-dollar rebuild of 2007 and 2008.

Big Red is the reason a lot of people know this ground. He was made in 1979 by a student, Ralph Carey, for about three hundred dollars of foam, synthetic fur, plastic tubing and aluminium, and he has since been one of the most decorated mascots in the country. The red towel came over from the basketball coach E. A. Diddle and the crowd still waves it. Bowling Green is the mildest place in this conference, and Western Kentucky's 2026 home games run from late September to the end of November, which takes the worst of the heat out of the calculation.

There is NO PERMANENT SEATING IN EITHER END. The west stand is new — about five thousand seats from the 2007-08 rebuild, with the eight-hundred-and-thirty-two-seat Harbaugh Club and boxes, and since 2024 a fifteen-thousand-square-foot press box above it carrying television and radio booths and premium suites. The east stand is the original 1968 structure, the biggest in the ground, with an upper deck that spells HILLTOPPERS in the seats. The north end is a grass berm built in the same 2007-08 job, which is where most of the students watch from, with a railway line running along behind it. The south end is a walkway joining the two sides. New FieldTurf went down in 2024 with Big Red on the twenty-fives.
