Huntington Bank Stadium opened in September 2009 to bring Minnesota football back onto campus from the Metrodome, ending a twenty-eight-year exile. It was TCF Bank Stadium until 2021. It is a horseshoe left open at the west end on purpose, looking back at the campus with the Minneapolis skyline behind, exactly as the old Memorial Stadium did, and it was the first football stadium of any kind to be certified LEED.
The Gopher Victory Walk sets off nearly three hours before kick-off through a corridor of maroon and gold. The band forms the Block M at the interval, spins it through a half turn and walks it apart; Ski-U-Mah dates from 1884; Goldy Gopher works the crowd; and the rivalry trophies, the Little Brown Jug among them, are on show inside. Row the Boat is the mantra you will hear and see choreographed.
Two levels on the sidelines, with backed seats between the goal lines and aluminium bench elsewhere, and a three-level press box; the main concourse runs right round the second level open to the pitch. The closed east end is a ten-thousand-seat student section, and the open west end holds the Veterans Tribute. The pitch runs east-west, which is unusual for this sport, and combined with the open end it makes this the most wind-exposed building in the conference — heating coils were laid under the surface for exactly that reason, and an NFL playoff game here was played at twenty-five below wind chill. Dress for the end you are sitting in.
