Ohio Stadium opened in 1922 and is on the National Register of Historic Places, which is unusual for a building that still holds a hundred thousand people every autumn. The horseshoe shape that gives it its nickname was the original design; the south end was closed and double-decked in a 2001 renovation, so the modern bowl is a horseshoe with the open end filled in rather than a true ring.

The band comes out before the players and Script Ohio happens before kick-off, so arriving late costs you the thing many people came for. The bowl is deep and the concrete is old, which makes it loud in a low, rumbling way rather than a sharp one. The Olentangy river runs right behind the west stands and the whole campus walks in past it.

Three tiers on the sidelines — A deck at field level, B deck above it, C deck at the top — and a shallower stack on the closed south end. A deck sidelines are the reference view and the rows near the front are almost level with the field, which trades height for proximity. B deck is the sweet spot: high enough to see the shape of a play develop, low enough to still hear it. C deck is steep and far, and the last rows of the north open end are the most exposed seats in the stadium. Corners at any level do better than their price implies.
