Notre Dame Stadium opened in 1930 to a design Knute Rockne had a direct hand in, and it kept its original single-bowl shape for most of a century. The Campus Crossroads project finished in 2017 built three large academic and student buildings directly onto three sides, so the bowl is now enclosed by the university rather than standing alone. The mural on the library beyond the north end zone is visible from most of the stadium and has its own nickname.

The band marches from the Golden Dome, the players walk from the basilica and the whole pre-match is a procession across campus rather than a car park. It is the most ritualised gameday in the sport and none of it happens inside the stadium. There is no advertising on the video board and the stadium is quieter and more traditional than its peers by design.

Published figures range from 77,622 to 80,232 seats.

One continuous bowl with a single slope on all four sides, which makes it unusually consistent: there is no bad deck because there is only one. The lower rows on the sidelines are close and slightly flat; the middle and upper rows read the field better. The north end zone rows are the ones that give you the mural in the frame. The new buildings enclose three sides and provide premium seating at the top, and the back rows there are the highest seats in a stadium that is otherwise low.
