Waldo Stadium opened on 7 October 1939 with a 6-0 win over Miami of Ohio, which is now a conference rival, and it is named for Dwight B. Waldo, the university's first president. The playing surface became Stafford-Smith Field in October 2024 after a five-million-dollar gift from David and Ronda Stafford, the largest naming gift in the history of Western Michigan athletics; David Stafford played for the Broncos in the late eighties. The capacity has not changed since 1989.
A howitzer is fired after every score from above one end, a student rides a horse onto the field at the start of every home game, and the band plays I Got a Gal in Kalamazoo — a Glenn Miller record from 1942 that is the city's unofficial anthem — and spells W-M-U towards both sides before kick-off. Beer has been sold since 2023, with a wristband check on both sides and sales stopping at the start of the fourth quarter. Two of the 2026 home games are Tuesday nights in November, which in southern Michigan, in a ground with open corners and no roof, is exactly as cold as it sounds.
A single-tier bowl with seating on all four sides but the CORNERS LEFT OPEN, so it never closes and the wind gets through. Most of it is aluminium bench, with plastic seats under the press box. The John Gill press box and the Stadium Club sit on one sideline — the club was rebuilt for three and a half million dollars in 2024 with a new canopy, a horseshoe bar, a sunken lounge and an outdoor patio usable all year — and suites sit above three sections of stand. The Seelye Athletic Center closes the east end. Part of the south side is built against a hillside with the car park on top, so from there you walk down into the ground rather than up. Students sit on the north sideline.
