Football has been played on this patch since 1901, when it was Carson Field, which makes it one of the oldest continuously used sites in the sport. The permanent stadium was begun in 1915 and dedicated in November 1924 to Jimmy Nippert, a captain who died on Christmas Day 1923 of an infection from a boot-stud wound taken in the Thanksgiving game; his grandfather, James Gamble of Procter & Gamble, paid to finish the building. It is buried inside the campus, ringed so tightly by academic buildings that the exterior is barely visible, which is why people call it the Wrigley Field of college football.
The team walks in through the tailgate on the Catwalk before kick-off and the band comes down from the top of an end stand onto the pitch. Nippert at Night is a branded fixture and is the one to pick if you can. It is a small, steep, enclosed horseshoe and it is loud out of all proportion to its size — this was voted the best ground in its former conference on exactly that basis.
The pitch was widened for professional soccer in 2017 and the corner seating was cut back, which is why figures near 40,000 from the 2015 rebuild are still quoted.
A horseshoe: the north curve was never built as a full bowl and was closed in 2005 with an irregular permanent stand carrying the video board. The west side is the five-storey pavilion from the 2015 rebuild — glass and cross-braced steel — holding the press box on three levels along with clubs, suites and a rooftop terrace. The east side is the 1954 stand with an upper deck added in 1991 and walkways that widen a very tight concourse. Students fill the south end. The lower bowl has a shallow rake, a legacy of the pitch being dug down in the 1936 work, while the upper rows are considerably steeper, so height matters more here than at most grounds this size.
