There has been a stadium on this site since 1927; it was Rice Stadium from 1972 and Rice-Eccles from 1997, and then it was demolished and rebuilt from the ground up, reopening in September 1998. Four years later it staged the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2002 Winter Olympics, and the Olympic cauldron still stands, relocated, in a plaza just outside the south-west corner. The ring was finally closed in 2021 by an eighty-million-dollar south end that added something over five thousand seats and a concourse that now runs the whole way round.

The student section — the MUSS — jumps on every third down, and after every match, home or away, won or lost, the team comes over and sings the fight song with them. The U on the mountain above the campus is lit red after a win. At four thousand six hundred feet the air is thin and the evenings cool off quickly, and the run of sell-outs here goes back well over a decade.

A fully closed bowl since 2021 with a 360-degree concourse. The south end is the newest part of the building and the densest in premium — suites, loge boxes, a ledge and a rooftop — while one sideline carries a tall glazed press and suite tower served by twin lift towers. The pitch runs north to south, so the shade crosses from one sideline to the other as an afternoon game goes on rather than settling on one side. Corner seats give you both twenty-yard lines and cost less than the middle.
