The NHL Winter Classic comes to Rice-Eccles Stadium on New Year's Eve 2026: the Utah Mammoth host the Colorado Avalanche outdoors, on a rink built in the middle of a college football field at 1,400 metres of altitude.

An outdoor game changes the seating maths completely. The rink is assembled over the middle of the field, so every seat is further from the ice than it would be in an arena, and the first rows of the lower bowl lose their angle: they end up looking along the boards rather than down at the play. The seats that win are the ones people avoid for football — high in the sidelines, where the whole rink sits in the frame.
