Autzen Stadium opened in 1967 on the north bank of the Willamette, built inside an artificial embankment so that it needed no ramps and went up in nine months for a little over two million dollars. It is named for Thomas J. Autzen, a Portland timber man whose son funded it — and who was, awkwardly, an Oregon State graduate. The pitch has been Rich Brooks Field since 1995 and the 2002 rebuild added twelve thousand seats down the south side.
The chant is split: the north side shouts GO and the south answers DUCKS. Before every game the announcer's line, in place since 1990, is that it never rains in Autzen Stadium, and the whole crowd says it with him. A train horn sounds when Oregon score and the Duck does one press-up for every point. The noise here was measured at over 127 decibels in 2007, and the walk in is across a footbridge over the river from the campus side.
It is a compact sunken bowl and the pitch is below you from the first row, which is why it sounds bigger than fifty-four thousand. The north side carries the press box and the three-storey skysuite block from the late 1980s; the south side is the 2002 premium expansion with its own club; the ends are low and open and the enormous screen sits over the east one. The axis runs roughly east-west and was deliberately skewed so that players are not looking into the late-season sun, which also means the sun crosses the ends rather than one whole sideline.
