Bowers Stadium opened on 13 September 1986 with a 26-3 win over Montana State, as Bearkat Stadium, and took Elliott T. Bowers' name in 1989 when he retired after twenty years as president. Sam Houston did not play here at all in 2025: the entire home season was moved to Houston while a sixty-million-dollar rebuild went up, part of a ninety-million-dollar athletics programme. The ground reopened with public tours on 30 July 2026, so 2026 is the first season anyone sees the new building.
The Army ROTC fires a cannon after every Bearkat score. Sammy Bearkat has been appearing in costume since 14 December 1959, but the nickname is older: it dates from 1923, when Sam Houston Normal Institute became a teachers' college and the old nickname of Normals stopped making sense, and it comes from the local saying that something is as tough as a bearkat. It is spelled with a K because the animal was regarded as more myth than fact. Bearkat Alley runs alongside the ground for tailgating, and the March to Bowers brings the band, the spirit squads and the student organisations down to the north end on family weekend. September in Huntsville is hot, humid and prone to afternoon thunderstorms.
Everything new is on the WEST: a five-level structure of roughly sixty thousand square feet with twelve suites and a presidential suite, a club level for around two hundred and twenty-five with an indoor lounge, four-person boxes and an outdoor terrace, a two-storey club lounge, a patio deck linked to the main concourse by a walkway, a widened covered concourse and a new video board. The running track came out in 2024, which pulled both sidelines in towards the pitch. The bowl is deliberately NOT closed — the university said it wanted a boutique feel and turned down the idea of a full ring — so permanent seating runs along the two sidelines only. The east is the student and general-admission side, and the new west tower is now the only real shade in the building.
